Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) has taken multiple steps in recent years to promote environmental sustainability. According to CUSD80.com, there’s a strong focus on water conservation, student education, and hands-on environmental initiatives. Across the district, sustainability is often integrated into classroom learning through STEM programs, encouraging students to engage in science and environmental problem-solving. One major effort involves partnerships with the City of Chandler to educate students about water conservation. According to ChandlerAZ.gov, schools participate in programs like water-focused assemblies, environmental art contests, and the annual Water Festival, which teaches students about groundwater, watersheds, and conservation technology. These initiatives aim to build long-term awareness of water use in a desert environment. According to CUSD80.com, at Chandler High School, students have contributed directly to environmental efforts through activities such as tree planting projects led by student organizations like FFA. These projects help increase green space, improve air quality, and educate students on ecological responsibility. Additionally, ChandlerAZ.gov states that high school students across the district are encouraged to participate in urban forestry programs, where they help plant and maintain trees in public spaces. Zachary Mejia, a Junior at Chandler High School stated, “I’ve seen how FFA works with the community to plant trees around the area.” These hands-on experiences connect environmental education with real-world impact while promoting sustainability in the broader Chandler community. Overall, CUSD’s approach combines education, community partnerships, and student-led action. By focusing on water conservation, environmental awareness, and active participation, the district and schools like Chandler High are working to create a more sustainable future.
