Imagine stepping onto the mat, ready to give your all for a single point to take the match, with the sound of the crowd roaring in the background. What would your first move be? Wrestling is a sport that blends strength, strategy, and split-second-decision making, challenging athletes to think as fast as they can move. Picture the intensity of battling for every point, every position, every second. From explosive takedowns to endurance drills during practice, wrestling pushes competitors to test their limits and discover what they’re truly capable of, and we’re honored to witness this unmatched experience here at Chandler High School.
From taking down competitors on the mat to focusing on physical and combat technique, the wrestling team builds strength and precision both on and off the mat and forms a team bond like no other on campus. Sophomore wrestler Emily Martinez Lechuga said, “The team is all really nice and we all help each other and support each other and keep each other in check.”
While team camaraderie is important, don’t think that Chandler’s wrestling teams don’t care about winning. Because they really do. Chandler’s wrestling program has an extensive record of achievements earned from their determination on the circle. If you take a visit to the Chandler High Wrestling website, you’ll see that our wrestling team takes pride in their state title, four individual national champions, ten All-Americans, and several wrestlers that have gone on to compete at the college level.
The wrestling team offers new skill sets and thrilling experiences for not only wrestlers with years of experience, but even wrestlers who had never stepped foot on the mat before this season. Sophomore Zeoanny Sierra joined wrestling a mere few weeks ago and already loves the thrill and exhilaration of the sport and the new skills she has gained, ranging from holding her own in matches to bonding with a new group of peers. “I’ve only been in wrestling for a little but I’ve learned so many new skills and improved my stamina,” Sierra said.
The veterans of the team shared their positive experiences, too. Senior Travis Cardenas, who joined the team when he was sixteen, said that his time on the wrestling team has taught him “discipline and just to believe in myself.”
With the wrestling season finally kicking off along with the rest of Chandler High School’s winter sports, our team is searching for more Wolves to help defend our titles and hold Chandler’s own on the mat. It’s never too late to start, and the wrestling team invites our students to come give their sport a try!
