Music is a broad form of creativity that unites people through different cultures, vibes, and genres. Through music people meet others with similar interests and explore different cultures they might not have experienced otherwise. One genre that has become increasingly popular in recent years and that has popularized a new style of music all over the world is K-Pop, and the Chandler High K-Pop Club is bringing that culture and sense of unity to our campus.
K-Pop, or Korean pop music, has become a beloved style of music across the globe. Originally becoming a form of music in the early 1990s, the genre of music started to take the world by storm in the early 2010s with the help of some popular releases you might know, such as PSY’s “Gangnam Style”. Although the genre received its initial western boost through popular groups like BTS and BLACKPINK, there are hundreds of groups that are loved by many not only In Korea, but everywhere throughout the world.
The Chandler High School K-Pop club works to provide recognition to these groups and gives their fans here at Chandler a chance to share and display their love for this type of music. The K-Pop Club, sponsored by math teacher Mr. Luna, was founded by students who wanted to create a space for members to share their passion for the genre and form friendships through the love of music. Some activities that take place in the club include watching K-Pop music videos, playing Korean games, participating in potlucks, and partaking in giveaways for K-Pop albums and posters.

K-Pop is a genre close to many people’s hearts and having a place for them to express that is important. The club’s Social Media Manager, Danielle Jackson, who got into K-Pop in elementary school, told us, “K-Pop just makes me feel so happy it just fills me with excitement when it’s mentioned.”
Many club members view the K-Pop Club as a safe space to indulge in their interests with friends. Club Historian Lucas Simpson said, “The club feels friendly—no one will judge you!” Whether you’re new to the genre or have been a fan for years, you’re sure to find new friends and new exciting opportunities at the K-Pop Club!
