2024 Oscars Predictions

[Editor’s Note: This story was written before the 2024 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, were awarded on March 10, 2024.]

With award season coming in full swing this year one of the most anticipated and prestigious award shows is right around the corner, The Oscars. This year will mark the 96th Annual Academy Awards with nominations for some of 2023’s biggest movies such as Barbie and Oppenheimer.

When it comes to the biggest award, Best Picture, there seems to be some tough competition. Many of these movies made huge commotion this year whether it was for being released on the same or for being three hours long. In my opinion, I think it would be interesting to see a movie like Yorgo Lanthimos’ Poor Things take home the award, given how unique the film was.

The Oscars wouldn’t be the Oscars without a few snubs though, and I think one of those was involved in the best supporting actor category. Dominic Sessa did an outstanding job in the movie The Holdovers (also nominated for Best Picture) alongside best actor nominee, Paul Giamatti. When nominations first came out, the internet was in shock over the lack of nominations for Barbie in both the director and leading actress category, as the movie took the world by storm. Despite that, Ryan Gosling was able to score 2 nominations, for Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actor.

The Netflix movie May December was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. This is something I find interesting as I don’t see Netflix movies often get recognized during award season, so it is nice to see awards extend to streaming service movies. Killers of the Flower Moon is a highly nominated movie this year. The movie was mostly commonly heard when discussing the length of the movie similar to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. An interesting part of many of these movie releases is that many of them were released during the SAG strike meaning the actors and crew couldn’t really talk about or promote their work.

She decided to join the newspaper this year because she had Ms. Yap, who’s the newspaper’s advisor, during her junior year for English class, “I had Ms. Yap for English last year, I really liked her and writing.” Emily believes that journalism means to get information out into the world and to make people more aware of current events. Some interesting topics that appeal to her when writing are entertainment and pop culture. When Emily graduates, she hopes to become a journalist.
