Club Spotlight: FFA welcomes 300 new freshman members to FFA Day

FFA is an agricultural education program that stands for Future Farmers of America.

Lily Eaton

At Chandler High we have three agricultural advisors; Mr. Argueta, Mrs. Williams, and our new teacher Ms. Lewis.

According to Mr. Argueta, FFA is leadership in agriculture which prepares students for the future. On the local level, FFA members are divided into chapters, typically by what school they attend. Chandler FFA is made up of 480 members, making it one of the largest clubs on campus. This year the chapter welcomed about 300 freshman members, also known as “greenhands”.

At the beginning of every year, the chapter officers hold an introduction day for the new members called FFA Day. The purpose of this event is to get the first-year members experience and information about FFA.

Freshman Xochitl Lara said she enjoyed FFA Day greatly. She said the activities were entertaining, her favorite being dancing with everyone during lunch because it showed her that FFA is more than just work; it’s a community. She said she learned that FFA provides a lot of opportunities for students, such as helping them find agricultural or non-agricultural careers that they want to pursue. Xochitl wants to continue in agricultural classes throughout high school because she says it will give her many opportunities in college and success in future careers.

FFA Day was a huge success and gave students an opportunity to see what lies ahead in this club and field.

Lily Eaton, Reporter
Lily Eaton is a cheerful freshman member of the Wolf Howl. Lily serves as a reporter, hoping to focus on sports journalism. Lily plays softball and feels like her experience with the sport gives her insight into being an athlete and reporting on athletics. She says, “ I take sixth hour softball, so I know a lot of the coaches and athletes throughout the school and I can make connections with them.” Coming from a charter school, Lily feels that being in the Wolf Howl is a new and exciting experience. After high school, Lily hopes to possibly pursue a career in law and feels like journalism is an excellent way to practice voicing her opinion to large audiences.
