Twitter Gets “X”ed

Twitter. The little blue bird app on your phone that, for 17 years, has been used to share everything from news to memes to messaging. At its peak, Twitter was once worth $61.51 Billion, but after being bought by billionaire Elon Musk for $44 Billion in 2022, Twitter is estimated to have lost over $20 billion in value. The Tesla founder purchased the app in the fall of 2022. Still, it wasn’t until July of 2023 that the little blue bird was replaced with a large “X.” Musk completely rebranded the app with the hopes of bidding adieu to the “bird” imagery and turning the platform into an “everything app,” containing banking, shopping, and social media aspects. 

Elon Musk is famous for his work in space exploration, electric vehicles, and renewable energy and is recognized for his penchant for innovation. His purchase of Twitter aligns with his vision of pushing the boundaries of technology and communication. Musk’s interest in Twitter is more than financial; it stems from his belief in the platform’s potential to facilitate meaningful discourse, disseminate information rapidly, and foster global connectivity.
