Voices of Chandler is a new club at CHS that began last quarter, started by freshman Maria Bartolome and sponsored by English and AVID teacher Makayla Harper. The club’s goal is to bring together students whose first language is not English to build unity and connections, create a safe space, and bond with other CHS students. Chandler High School is very diverse, and Voices of Chandler wants to celebrate and embrace this diversity while bringing our CHS community closer. This club is the first of its kind and strives to grow, celebrate culture, and get students together.
Maria Bartolome, the president of Voices of Chandler, came up with the idea for this club after seeing many students struggling with English. She sought out Ms. Harper, and they then decided to create a space where students can explore new languages and cultures. Her goal is to help students learn small things step by step and gradually practice more. “Students have learned new words, even if it’s just a few; that’s a big step for us. I feel proud of their progress.”
Ms. Harper shares some impactful memories, such as Maria coming to her about starting the club, and many students, including those who speak English, inquiring about it and wanting to help and learn. Her role as the sponsor involves assisting the president in planning meetings, spreading news and awareness, and managing the teacher aspects of running the club. However, her goal is for the club to be very student-centered and student-run. She highlighted that this club is for anyone and everyone. Although it is centered around those learning English, all are welcome to help, celebrate, and have fun!
Both Ms. Harper and Maria shared the struggle of promoting the club and getting students to attend meetings. As a new club, not many students are motivated, making it a challenge to gain participation. However, as the school year progresses, they hope the club will continue to grow. Voices of Chandler is a fantastic club with excellent opportunities for every single student on campus. Make sure to check out a meeting!
Voices of Chandler is looking to meet on Mondays or Thursdays. Keep a lookout for announcements for upcoming meetings, and for any questions, see Ms. Harper in Rm. 101.
