Even when their choices for materials were only dirt, mud, sticks, and wood, artists have been creating art since the dawn of humanity. But some fear that the rise of Artificial Intelligence is changing the art world for the worse.
Today, AI tools allow anybody with access to the internet to “create” art for free online in seconds; type in a prompt, and the art appears almost instantly!
Most AI users don’t understand the real life cost of “free” art. The processing power needed for artificial intelligence programs is huge, and the servers that run generative AI programs generate massive amounts of heat that are often cooled using water or air conditioning.
A Washington Post story from 2004 reported that using ChatGPT to write just one 100-word email uses the equivalent of over one bottle of water.
Aside from the environmental cost, AI-generated art makes things much harder for real human artists who are trying to earn a living doing what they love.
Chandler High School and Drawing and Painting 3 student Pearl Juarez said, “AI takes the human away from the art.”
“It sucks as an artist; it’s like a very low chance for you to get an actual career you’re actually passionate about and making good money out of it,” Pearl continued.
Her classmate, Lucia Kotselas, is even more blunt about her feelings about people who use generative AI: “If you’re using it, I’m just going to look down on you… Not in any situation. You don’t need it.”
