Mrs. Courtney Kemp is a well-known faculty member at Chandler High School. She has been a Psychology and Social Studies teacher here for the past eight years. A full-time teacher and a head of the International Baccalaureate program here, she also sponsors numerous clubs, including Letters for Rose, Model UN, and others around campus. Her door is always be open to students who need help with not just school, but their personal issues as well.
“High school is a huge part of a person’s life, and I want to make sure kids know that they always have someone rooting for them,” Mrs. Kemp explained. She acknowledges the struggles that kids go through in and out of her classroom and explains how easy it is to feel isolated and as if you’re stuck. Being a psychology teacher, you have to teach complex matters such as suicide and very mentally challenging thoughts. When asked how she tackles the task of teaching kids about those harsh subjects, she stated, “It’s crucial to let the kids know they’re in a safe place. If a kid feels like they need to step out of the classroom, they are more than welcome to. Make sure always to follow up with the kid if they seem like they are struggling, it helps them feel heard.”
Mrs. Kemp is someone who isn’t scared by the challenges that young people encounter today; instead, she faces those challenges head-on and makes sure that each kid who comes through her door goes home knowing they’re not alone. If you would like to reach out to Mrs. Kemp about clubs, IB, or or even just to chat, she’s available in room M214.
