Do you ever feel that the schedule needs to be adjusted to benefit the students at Chandler? What do you think we could do to improve the schedule? Do some of your classes make you late to other ones? Does the lunch schedule need to be changed?
Chandler High School students Aaron Doan and Maurice Dixon recently joined us to discuss their opinions on this year’s bell schedule and return to two lunch periods instead of three. They shared their ideas about how to improve the bell schedule, including extending lunch by 5-10 minutes to give students enough time to get to the cafeteria, fight long lines to get their food, and still be able to eat. The lunch rush seems to be a problem, especially for students who venture off campus, since many students like going to nearby fast food places, like Little Caesars’ and Jack in the Box. The number of students crowding into these places has grown tremendously since the change this year to two lunches rather than three, making lines and wait times longer. This makes things difficult for students who want to eat off campus but also want to make it to class on time when lunch ends, not to mention actually having time to eat the food they ordered.
Aaron and Maurice also believe passing periods between classes should be extended to ten minutes instead of eight. This would especially help students who have classes in K building or the portables, so that they can make it across campus in time.
Another possibility that students have wanted for a while is regularly scheduled “half days”. Half days can be beneficial for a lot of students, allowing them to participate in group working sessions, make up work, or study for a test or quiz. Study sessions could last up to an hour or two, and students would be able to come and go as they needed.
Our hope is that we will see beneficial changes to the schedule that will be more convenient for the students of Chandler High.
