Most of us expect Arizona to be hot this time of year, but 2024 has been remarkable for its record-breaking, unusually high temperatures. The city of Phoenix, which records some of the hottest weather in the state, reached its 100th straight day of at least 100F-degree temperatures, shattering the streak of 76 days in 1993. Most days, the weather has been sunny, bright, and hot, with an average high of 105F or higher.
While extreme heat is tough on everyone, it can feel especially hard on students, who find themselves walking across campus throughout the day between classes. With the vast size of our large campus, it’s not hard to find CHS students with complaints about their lengthy walks to classes in the Chandler Center for the Arts or K building.
“I hate the heat, especially when I leave and walk to school every day,” said CHS student Kimberly. She said it’s also particularly tough when she attends class in the Fine Arts building and then must go directly to the K building for her Spanish class afterward.
Luckily, it feels like the weather is finally cooling down this week, but in the meantime, there are things students can do to keep themselves safe in the heat. Take advantage of the shade, especially during midday (like lunch), and keep a filled water bottle with you during passing periods and classes.
