Have you ever wondered about Asian American culture or the history of Asian Americans? At Chandler High, Ms. Jamie Ishino sponsors the Asian American Student Union, a group that meets every Wednesday after school in the JSU. Officers Emily Chao and Alina Nguyen sat down with the Wolf Howl to share their experiences about the club and what being a member of AASU means to them.
Emily Chao, senior, participates in all kinds of activities around school, from sports such as Varsity Tennis and Badminton to clubs including the STEM Club, Model UN, and Asian American Student Union. Emily enjoys traveling all around the world with her friends and family and enjoys taking pictures of life around her. Emily believes being part of Asian American Student Union allows her to expand her social and personal horizons: “Being involved in clubs and activities gives you the opportunity to meet and mingle with people that you really can’t in other ways.” Emily also loves the opportunity that AASU gives students to learn more about the Asian American population at our school, learn about Asian American culture, and so much more.
Another officer is Alina Nguyen, who is also a fellow senior at Chandler. Like Emily, Alina also participates several clubs and sports teams. Alina also loves to travel with family and friends, and this year she even had the opportunity to travel to Vietnam! Alina joined the Asian American Student Union in her freshman year “to make a difference in [her] school and to make friends.”
Besides connecting students who want to learn and share about Asian American culture, Asian American Student Union hosts many volunteer opportunities as well, so IB students, NHS members, or students looking to get involved in your community, this club is the way to go! They participate in many different activities throughout the year, including clothing donations, food banks, and local school volunteering.
