The City of Chandler holds many appealing and entertaining events year-round for the people in the community to interact, learn, and spend time together. One of these events is the Local Author’s Fair which took place on Saturday, April 6th at the Downtown Library. It is an amazing opportunity to try new and fun activities, such as hearing local authors talk about their literary masterpieces, making zines, typing on a vintage typewriter and more. You can even get a book tote and create your own writing journal.
The Local Author’s Fair has many aspects that everyone can enjoy, “whether you’re an avid reader, aspiring writer, or simply curious about the local talent, the Chandler Public Library… promises an unforgettable experience for all.” (chandlerlibrary.org)
It is a wonderful way to spark people’s interest in writing, reading, and simply encourage them to be creative. There are many benefits that come from writing, and it is commendable that the city of Chandler is working towards motivating people to try this for themselves. Ms. Haffey here at CHS says, “I think writing really helps you learn your voice and it helps you communicate with the world.”
Enjoy choosing from all the supplies that are provided, like buttons and stickers, while crafting a journal unique to your preferences. You could even enter your name in a raffle to win one of the three tote bags which contain books, a mug, a candle, pens, and more. Not to mention how this fair lets you experience what life was like in the past before computers and all the technology that we have now. Writing on a typewriter helps people better understand all the time and work that went into printing before. Jeremiah Bukovszky, who helped coordinate the typewriter exhibit, says that even though “technology is progressing so fast… there is something a little bit more real about typewriters” as you actually see what you are typing on paper.
If you have been looking for your next book to read, you might find one that interests you from the wide variety available at the fair. You will see books from different genres, from historical novels to comic books. These were all written by authors from Arizona, whom you can even talk to about what inspired or influenced their stories. Not to mention the positive impact reading has on people of all ages. CHS English teacher, Mrs. Harper, comments that books help people “learn a lot about themselves…Books give us…opportunities to kind of reflect and find things within ourselves that we didn’t know…I think that is really important for students.”
Jada, a librarian at the Downtown Library, said that this event “encourages people to consider writing as both a hobby and a career.” It really is an amazing way of meeting new people and learning about the past. This is a yearly celebration, so make sure to come and celebrate the art of writing with the community in the upcoming event. Besides, it is possible that you could find an amusing hobby, discover a new skill, or simply have a nice time.
