On April 9-11 freshmen and juniors had testing. The tests can take quite the toll on students, so here are a few tips on how to handle them.
According to Harvard, in order to be successful when testing you must cultivate good study habits; don’t cram the night before, “Understanding and remembering information for a test takes time” it is really important to take your time studying and to not procrastinate.
You have probably heard it many times before and may have overlooked it, but getting a good night’s sleep and eating a good breakfast is extremely important. According to Coursea, staying up late the night before is much more harmful than good. If you get enough sleep you will be more alert during the test, have an improved long-term memory, enhanced mood, and your stress levels will be decreased during the test. Healthy Children states that eating a good breakfast before your test can help improve your concentration and your energy.
During the test there are multiple strategies you can use. Harvard talks about how important it is to read over the whole test before starting then answering all the questions you know first, because there is no point in getting stuck on questions you don’t know, so move forward and come back later if you have time. The best case scenario is that you may find those challenging questions easier when you come back, “your mind is warmed up and you are fully engaged and focused at this point in the test”.
There are many ways to be successful before and during your tests, if you take the necessary steps you should be able to do well on any upcoming tests you may have. Hopefully these tips are helpful, as they could make the difference between a failing and passing grade.
