For the past few weeks here at CHS, there have been rumors about other students smashing windows, stealing valve caps off of car tires, vandalism, and more. Juniors have been scared to park in the Junior parking lot because of the fear of their car being broken or stolen. Some students have experienced these issues of vandalism and theft. CHS security guards and administration strongly suggest reporting any misconduct to the office so they can deal with these issues.
Junior student Julianna Ortiz reported experiencing acts of vandalism and theft for the past three weeks. She says that in her experience, she has experienced acts of vandalism and theft by other students: “I’ve experienced my encounters of people just stealing stuff and trashing the bed of my truck.” Although she filed a complaint, she still feels uneasy about this issue. She strongly believes that all parties involved should be held accountable. “I feel they [students] should get written up and have their parents know about it.” She notes that messing with personal property should not be tolerated, students should not mess with cars that are not theirs.
Security officer Norman, who oversees the junior parking lot, has heard about these rumors but has not seen any students conduct themselves in an ill manner in the parking lot: “I haven’t seen this issue, but if there was I would take action to make sure it didn’t happen.” Security officer Norman says, “If this issue is seen, it would be taken to the principal and the principal can deal with this with the police because it is a crime.” Norman suggests that if any student sees another student misbehave, they should report it immediately to the office and the principal or security. Norman makes it clear that juniors are still able to park safely in the junior parking lot with no worries about vandalism or theft on any of the cars.
The Dean of Students, Mr. Darr has not heard of any of these issues except for Julianna’s case. He has not heard or seen any students conduct themselves in an ill manner around campus. Mr. Darr says, “The consequences can range from lunch detention to ISS (in-school suspension) or OSS (out-of-school suspension) but it depends on the situation.” Just as security officer Norman has said, Mr. Darr has suggested that if you see any misbehavior, report it immediately to an adult.
Here at CHS, faculty and administrators are always to look out for students if there is an issue. This is why juniors should not be worried about parking in the student parking lot. There are many security guards around after school overseeing students and teachers leaving the parking lot in case of an emergency such as vandalism, theft, or breaking another car. As of now, there is only one documented case of this issue connected to the recent rumors of misconduct in the parking lot, and it is being actively investigated.
